A hole in the wall Dominican restaurant in Washington Heights in Manhattan.

We sat at the counter and ordered dinner sized portions of already prepared stewed Oxtail and also Chicken.  We had a choice of Red (kidney beans), Yellow (our choice) and also white rice.

The Oxtail was really delicious.  The Chicken reminded me of Filipino adobo Chicken perhaps less vinegary.

The star of the meal was the made to order
Camarofongo- Plantain Ball with Shrimp and Pork cracklings.  The Plantain ball was super delicious with great crunch and umami from the embedded pieces of Pork crackings.  The Shrimp came out on a separate dish stewed in a tomato sauce with onions and green peppers.  The Camarofongo is a must try dish in my opinion.

Hole in the wall places like La Barca are what makes the NYC dining scene so interesting.

Roy's Top 5 Things to Know:

    1. A  hole in the wall Dominican Restaurant so more of a delivery spot than dine-in.
    2. Their chicharron de pollo sin hueso is really good. The best in the neighborhood only second to Dyckman Express' sin hueso. Their rice and beans are as good as any in the neighborhood as well.
    3. They deliver late night, probably the most late night Dominican restaurant delivery spot in the neighborhood. Most spots stop past 10pm. This spot easily delivers past 11pm.
    4. They deliver to the Children's Hospital if you're expecting a new child.
    5. They have metered parking in front on Broadway.

We were 4 adults & 1 baby, small place but they made room for us real quick. We sat at the counter with stools. Very friendly and attentive staff. We ordered 3 pollo guisados with morro de gandules, 1 chivo with morro con habichuelas, side of espaguetis, 3 espressos & ice cold cups of water. We ordered chivo with morro con habichuelas and extra sauce to go. Total cost was $45 and we left a $10 tip. There were 3 girls working together. Loli, Flaca & another girl. They were so nice. The food was DELICIOUS!!! & the coffee was AMAZING!!! We parked in a parking garage a block away with a huge suv and that was $24 for 1 hour on the dot. It would've been cheaper if we made it there a minute before.

A regular sitting at the counter next to me referred me to get the Moro Negro ( black rice / black beans ) saying he comes "all the way from 181st street" for theirs, which doesn't seem TOO far as La Barca is on 164th, but considering you probably pass a dozen Dominican restaurants on the way I'll take it as a high compliment.   The rice was tasty, not sure it was 15blocks tasty, but I'm kinda lazy sometimes. He said the other reason he comes is "to see her" as he flirted with the waitress, who admittedly, was 16blocks tasty for sure.  Probably 116 blocks if you have a bike.  A nice meal for $9. I bumped my bill up a bit by adding a papaya shake as a dessert.  Extra $4, but I was still a little hungry. Like 115.9 blocks hungry.  All I can muster, as I'm married.  Oh well.

No one told me this joint was Spanish speaking only. I mean I'm good but I wasn't ready for the language barrier nor was I ready for the amazing food that came out of this kitchen!!! Open counter concept with buffets of roasted chicken, oxtails, steak, and fish with rice and beans, tomato salads and avocados.

In my struggle Spanish( I must do better) I ordered (barely) Arroz con Pollo with frijoles. Couldn't figure out how to say Black beans and rice with gravy so I ate what I was given(see pic) .... and it was delicious!!

The chicken was stuffed with seasoning and herbs, the beans were flavorful with garlic and onion... Fluffy white rice too! I felt like I was eating at my grandma's house and that means a lot to a business traveller! And it was a $10 lunch plate I couldn't finish with tax and tip!

Try them out for lunch. It's packed so don't go with a large group. Wait your turn and slide into a seat when you can. Enjoy!
